Well now, this may be our specialist subject here at K Print. We love paper in all its forms, from the humble
business card to the all singing all dancing coffee table book, and it is not as damaging to the environment these
days as you think. It’s a commonly held belief that using paper is bad for the environment and this makes choosing
printed marketing materials a difficult choice these days. But what many people don’t know is that paper
production has come a long way since the early days of forestry management. In fact, paper is now one of the most
sustainable materials available.
Here are some myths about paper and the facts to set the record straight:
Myth 1: Paper Production is Responsible for Deforestation
Fact: In Europe, the total volume of forests is approximately 28 billion cubic meters. And it’s currently growing by
about 612 million cubic meters annually – or the size of 1500 football pitches every day.
The direct impact of paper production on European forests is therefore very limited. In fact, it’s estimated that only
14% of global deforestation can be attributed to paper production. This is because most of the world’s forests are
located in developing countries, where paper production is not a major industry.
Myth 2: Paper Consumption Is Responsible for the Majority of Carbon Dioxide Emissions
Fact: The pulp and paper industry accounts for around 2% of global CO2 emissions. To put this in perspective, the
transportation sector accounts for around 37% of global CO2 emissions.
And it’s worth noting that the forestry and paper industries are working hard to reduce their environmental impact.
In fact, many companies are now using recycled paper and pulp, as well as working towards using more renewable
energy sources.
Myth 3: Using Paper Is Bad for the Environment
Fact: Paper production has come a long way in recent years and is now one of the most sustainable materials
available.
Sustainably managed forests provide regional biodiversity and safeguard forests for future generations. And when
paper is recycled, it can be turned into new products over and over again – making it a very resource-efficient
material.
Myth 4: Paper Production Wastes Precious Resources
Fact: The paper industry is actually very resource-efficient. Recycled paper can be used up to 7 times before it
becomes too weak to be recycled again. And when it’s finally disposed of, paper decomposes quickly and doesn’t
release harmful toxins into the environment.
Paper production supports a circular economy – where resources are used and reused to their full potential.
Myth 5: Sustainably Managed Forests Are a Thing of the Past
Fact: Sustainably managed forests are actually on the rise. In Europe, the area of certified forests has increased to a
total of 857.8 billion cubic meters.
What’s more, the forestry and paper industries are working hard to promote sustainable forest management
practices. For example, the European Forest Institute has developed a set of guidelines for responsible forestry
operations.
How Printing Supports Sustainability
The printing industry has also made great strides in recent years to become more sustainable. For example, many
printers now use recycled paper and water-based inks. And some companies are even using solar power to run their
production facilities.
What’s more, the printing industry supports a circular economy – where waste is reduced, reused, and recycled. In
fact, the printing industry recycles more than 50% of its waste.
So, the next time you need to order your brochures or business cards, rest assured that you’re doing your part to
support a sustainable future.
